Kazuo Shiraga and <The Water Margin Hero series>

~ Finally completed! ~ I remember the relieved face of Shiraga when signed " She Quan".

It was Art-U gallery on the afternoon of April 22, 2001. At that time, I found out that the Water Margin Hero series was very important for Shiraga. “the Water Margin Hero series" will be the center of  Shiraga’ work. It's the work of his thirties' most invigorating era.

However, it took 40 years to complete only 2 painting left. ~I can forgive any bad guy, but I hate stingy thieves~ Although I was hoping for completion, I didn't get the motivation to make it. This is an illustration of Hokusai, a used bookstore that I happened to receive.

He was inspired by the coolness of <Shi Qian>. With that momentum, he also drew the < Bai Sheng> and completed the <the Water Margin Hero series >.

The main works of this series are stored in museums in Japan, but many of them have been leaked overseas, and it is difficult to find out about them. I thought Instagram and the blog were virtual spaces of Shiraga's heroes that they could not meet. And I realized that the title of the work and the human image of the hero were in agreement. I think that 108 heroes clearly lived in Shiraga that had been reading the Water Margin Hero series since childhood.

He said that ~ I decided the title after the completion of  the work by intuition, so don't think too deeply about it~.However, looking at the work, I think that he did gave the titles appropriately. The work and the image of the hero overlap and lead to the world of the Water Margin Hero series. However, as Shiraga says, it's good to be unrelated to the title.

Let’s narrow the existence as a purely painting works  <Untitled>. Painting works are just a means of human expression different from literature and words. When facing a Shiraga work, it resonates in the brainstem, not in the frontal lobe. It inspires the source of the inner human, life form, as if to look at Lascaux’s cave painting. Words, titles  should be guides.

For Shiraga who had been reading the <the Water Margin Hero series> since his childhood, the 108 heroes were clearly present in the boy's Shiraga like the monsters of today's children. Therefore,I am convinced that the <the Water Margin Hero series>world is irreplaceable when considering Kazuo Shiraga’s painting. It is the origin of the ideas of that creation. “Challenging Mud”, and ”Red Liquid” (the cow internal organs), ”Wild boar  Hunting” ( boar skin), and ”Red Logs”, and Clemson rake color which remind me of blood marks of the traces of battle.

I was strange for a long time. In the gap between the work and the Shiraga person himself. The difference between the soft word, the gentle personality, and the bizarre work is too much. But I was able to solve it with Chinese classics such as “the Water Margin Hero series” and “Three Kingdoms”. It is a story of the existence of a lively human being in the Chinese mainland a thousand years ago.

Do what others do not! Under the banner of Yoshiwara,”Gutai” was a big ring, and Kazuo SHIRAGA  grew up.He made his individuality bloom. It was Yoshiwara = “Gutai” that Shiraga  said that “Gutai” was a school, and Kazuo SHIRAGA“s painting was established. However he become a shining star in the global art world as “Shiraga”, jumped out of the “Gutai”.

Asobi

References to play abound in Japanese culture passed down over the centuries. Good examples include one of the Ryojin-hisho* songs, “We are all born to play, born to have fun. When I hear the voices of children playing, my old body still responds, wanting to join in,” and the Zen word, Yushin/Asobi-gokoro (A playful mind/Playfulness). Such references indicate that play (asobi) is one of the foundations of art and the popular arts. Similar ideas can be seen in the West, such as Johan Huizinga’s Homo Ludens (or Playing Man), which discussed the importance of play as an essential element in human activity and the origin of culture.

The experience of nursing and rearing my three children is vividly imprinted on my mind. Babies who had plenty of breast milk and sufficient sleep were absolutely brimming with curiosity. They played constantly, with their senses of touch, sight, and hearing in high gear, playing with their hands and feet, and putting anything they touched in their mouths. Once they started crawling, their curiosity went up another gear, seeming to drive the development of their physical abilities and motor skills. This curiosity is surely the essence of humanity, the manifestation of Asobi-gokoro or playful mind.

Please forgive the lengthy introduction, which largely serves to justify my own furtive play. I hope my playing will not overtax the artists’ generosity and compassion. You know, the artwork that I am now looking at has come forth from your womb. I don’t know if it was an easy delivery or an excruciatingly painful, difficult delivery, but now that it is done, the work that you gave birth to exists as a separate entity with its own independent character and its own life.

That entity sparks the fire of life in the hearts of viewers, triggering the ongoing emission of life energy that will transcend time and space. What happens is already outside the control of the artist who gave birth to it. When your art moves someone emotionally, that experience becomes his or her personal possession.

What does it mean to move someone? Surely it means stirring the viewer’s emotions and resonating inside him or her.Performing a ‘concerto’ that resounds with the joy of discovering an untouched vein of something precious inside the viewer is surely the most treasured form of play.
