1920年(大正9)、丹後半島の京都府中郡大野村に生まれる。小学校卒業後、働きながら日本画、次いで洋画を断続的に学ぶ。1947年(昭和22)、二紀会第1回展に入選。1953年(昭和28)、吉原治良のもとを訪ね師事し、翌年に吉原らが結成した具体美術協会の創立メンバーとなり、以後1972年(昭和47)の解散まで参加する。1960年(昭和35)頃からマッチの軸を用いた作品、1970年代中ごろからは布と糸による「縫い」の作品を制作。1999年(平成11)「集合と稠密のコスモロジー上前智祐」(大阪府立現代美術センター)、2012年(平成24)「卒寿を超えて『上前智祐の自画道』」(BBプラザ美術館)など個展・グループ展多数。

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1920. After finishing elementary school, Uemae began working while at the same time intermittently studying Japanese painting, and then Western- style painting. In 1947, his work was selected for the first Niki Exhibition. In 1953, Uemae visited Jiro Yoshihara to ask for advice, and in the following year, joined the Gutai Art Association as a founding member. He remained in the association till its disbandment in 1972. Uemae turned to create paintings by using matchsticks around 1960, and then in mid-1970s, tackled “sewing” works using cloth and thread. A number of solo exhibitions including the ones at Osaka Contemporary Art Center and BB Plaza Museum of Art.
