1928年(昭和3)、大阪市に生まれる。1947年(昭和22)、吉原治良に師事する。1950年(昭和25)、関西学院大学文学部卒業。1954年(昭和29)、具体美術協会の結成に参加。1955年(昭和30)、第2回具体美術展で「投擲(とうてき)絵画」を発表。1957年(昭和32)刊行の『具体』誌第6号に「絵筆処刑論」を寄稿。1975年(昭和50)、アーティスト・ユニオン(AU)の結成に参加。1994年(平成6)、自著『芸術とは、人を驚かせることである』を刊行。1999年(平成11)、紺綬褒章受章。2013年(平成25)、85歳で死去。

Born in Osaka in 1928, died in 2013 at the age of 85. Shimamoto began to visit Jiro Yoshihara seeking a comment in 1947. After graduating from the School of Humanities at Kwansei Gakuin University in 1950, he joined the Gutai Art Association in 1954 as a founding member. He displayed his first toteki kaiga (throwing painting) at the second Gutai Art Exhibition in 1955. He contributed his essay of “efude shokei ron” (proposal to “execute” paint brushes) to the sixth issue of Gutai, published in 1957. Shimamoto co-founded the Artist’s Union (AU) in 1975, and published a book titled Geijutsu to wa Hito wo Odorokaseru koto de aru (the purpose of art is to surprise people) in 1994. He was honored with the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon in 1999.
