Greetings from the founder of Art U

Art U opened with an exhibition of Kumi Sugai in 1983, and has maintained a focus on postwar Japanese art ever since. Many of the artists exhibited have their roots in Kansai or other connections to the Kansai area. With the gallery also being located in that part of Japan, we have concentrated on Kansai artists, and our main theme is Gutai art.

Postwar art is considered an important category in art history, but the generations with firsthand experience of the historical backdrop to that art are now shrinking. For some time after the end of the war, urban areas were still charred landscapes, dotted with rough huts put up by black marketeers. Everyone was hungry and disoriented. However, our spirits were free, liberated from long years of oppression. Lives that had been continually forced to confront death had their spirits lifted all at once, released in an intense torrent, as if floodgates had suddenly broken open.

It is under these circumstances that the category of postwar art came into being. Postwar art is consequently a sincere testimony to human life. If the same artists had lived in a different time, they probably would not have created that kind of art. Also, their art is imbued with the Kansai climate that became the core of Japanese culture. I am convinced that its origins in the fertile cultural soil of the Kansai area is what made this art so magnificent. No matter how much I explore postwar art, I never fail to be delighted by new discoveries. A moment of introspection reveals that my personal starting point for art is the memory of my painter father during the period when we were evacuated from our home. Even when he was exhausted from working during the day, and wasn't even sure if he would have food the next day, he would push himself at night, working on his art with an absolute frenzy under a single 100-Watt light bulb.

The time and environment that I was born into inform my work as a gallerist, and I am constantly attempting to communicate them to future generations. I keep working in the knowledge that encounters with magnificent works and people constitute the blessings of a gallerist's life. I am glad to be able to invite you to join me on my journey.

創立者ごあいさつ

　1983年に菅井汲展で開廊しました。爾来、＜戦後美術＞をテーマにしてきましたが、その多くの作家のルーツが関西に繋がること、またギャラリーのロケーションからも関西に絞られ、＜具体美術＞をメインテーマにしています。

　＜戦後美術＞は美術史の重要なカテゴリーとされていますが、その時代背景を実感しているジェネレーションは少なくなりました。当時、焼け野原となった街はヤミ市の掘建小屋が乱立し、誰もが空腹を抱えて彷徨っていたのです。しかし、長い抑圧から解放された精神は一気に解き放たれました。常に死と対峙させられていた生命は一気に高揚し、それはまるで堰を切った河のように激しい流れとなりました。＜戦後美術＞とはそのような時代背景の元に生まれたカテゴリーです。故に人間の真摯な生の証としての art ととして特筆されるのでしょう。もし同じアーティストが他の時代に生きたとしてもこのような作品は生まれなかったのではないでしょうか？

　特筆することは日本の文化の核となった関西の風土です。この関西の豊穣な文化土壌からこそ素晴らしい戦後美術が生まれたと確信し、それへの探求心は汲めども尽きません。内観すれば、疎開地で明日の糧も不確かな中、昼間の働きで疲れ切った体を鞭打ち100ワット電球の元で阿修羅のように制作に励んでいた画家・父の姿が Art に対する原点となっています。

　今後とも、生まれた時代、生まれた環境の縁を基盤にギャラリストとして未来に繋げていこうと思います。数々の素晴らしい作品と人との出会いこそギャラリストの冥利と邁進して参ります。ご同行の程よろしくお願い申し上げます。

We specialize in postwar Japanese art featuring works by Gutai Art Association (Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Sadamasa Motonaga, and other members) , Kumi Sugai and others artists.
